NETFLIX: WOKE FOKE COMEDY SPECIAL AINT BRINGING THE FUNNY LIKE WE EXPECTED

BY RAQCHEL

Katt Williams’ Netflix comedy special “WOKE FOKE'' received massive momentum due to the comedian’s viral YouTube interview with Shannon Sharpe on Club Shay Shay. The two-hour interview is a comedy master class. Due to the controversial stories and jaw-dropping jokes in the interview, the expectations for the special were extremely high.

First of all, if you watch this special, your expectations should be lowered for a better viewing experience, as the larger-than-life comedian delivered the most subdued one-hour set of his career. The low-energy performance ranks at the bottom of Katt Williams' work. More is expected from the comedic genius who gave us iconic lines like “poor little tink tink” and “what are you thinking about…running!” Even his “World War III” comedy special contained more humor with memorable quotes like "we’ve run out of wings, but we have plenty of thighs."

The energy for the entire special was flat. The audience and the comedian seemed to be phoning in the performance. This could be partially due to the platform the content is on and the audience and demographic that Netflix reaches. The jokes and storytelling seem to cater more to a white audience. In the past, Katt’s comedy routines mostly centered around black content and experiences. However, his last three Netflix specials have been lackluster, especially when stacked against his recent Club Shay Shay interview, which showcased the raw energy and storytelling that fans have come to expect. It could be the result of Netflix limiting what he can discuss. However, a half-muted Katt Williams is not what the people want.

The issues with “WOKE FOKE” stem from platform higherups missteps than Katt Williams’ performance. It’s possible that Netflix’s higher-ups had a major influence on the content and delivery of the special, which contributed to the lackluster performance. In conclusion, skip this special and rewatch “The Pimp Chronicles Pt.1, and stop giving folks who are not family the family recipes, or you'll get more neutered content like WOKE FOKE.
